In 2022, two new incremental companies were formed following the conversion of the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards to the specialised infantry role. These new units, No. 9 Company and No. 12 Company, continue the traditions of the 2nd Battalion, Irish Guards, which was placed in suspended animation in 1947.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.army.mod.uk/news-and-events/news/2022/09/irish-guards-form-two-new-companies-with-historic-links-for-future-role/ | title=Irish Guards form two new Companies with historic links for future role }}</ref> The number of soldiers participating in Trooping the Colour in London has declined over the years due to defence budget cuts in Household Division [[battalion]]s as well as the battalions' commitments to military and peacekeeping operations overseas.{{efn|group=note|For example, the Welsh Guards, prior to trooping their colour in 2006 had returned from Iraq and were scheduled to redeploy to Bosnia later that year.}} This gives some of the units little time to practise ceremonial functions. However, the format of the ceremony has remained the same over the centuries following routines of old battle formations used in the era of musket warfare. The 1988 parade was the last until 2023 to have all five regiments in participation, and in 1993 the parade was reduced from eight guards companies to six companies.
