In 1800, only 3% of humans lived in cities,<ref name="prb"/> compared to 50% by 2000.<ref name="prb6"/> [[Manchester]] had a population of 10,000 in 1717, by 1911 it had burgeoned to 2.3 million.<ref name="britannica7"/>
