Animals may also contract DCS, especially those caught in nets and rapidly brought to the surface. It has been documented in loggerhead turtles and likely in prehistoric marine animals as well.{{r|Gabbitiss 2017|Carlsen 2017}} Modern reptiles are susceptible to DCS, and there is some evidence that marine mammals such as cetaceans and seals may also be affected.{{r|Piantadosi and Thalmann 2004 |Sciencemag 2007 |Becker 2015}} AW Carlsen has suggested that the presence of a [[Cardiac shunt|right-left shunt]] in the [[Reptile#Circulation|reptilian heart]] may account for the predisposition in the same way as a [[patent foramen ovale]] does in humans.{{r|Carlsen 2017}}
