==== Marine animals ==== Since the late Eocene, about 40 million years ago, cetaceans populated the subtropical oceans and no longer emerged on land. An example is the 18 metre long ''[[Basilosaurus]]'', sometimes called ''Zeuglodon''. The transition from land to water was completed in about 10 million years.
