== Phonology == Adyghe phonology Adyghe exhibits between 50 and 60 consonants depending on the dialect. All dialects possess a contrast between plain and labialized glottal stops. A very unusual minimal contrast, and possibly unique to the Abzakh dialect of Adyghe, is a three-way contrast between plain, labialized and palatalized glottal stops (although a palatalized glottal stop is also found in Hausa and a labialized one in Tlingit). The Shapsug (Black Sea) dialect of Adyghe contains a very uncommon sound: a voiceless bidental fricative h酞蛦, which corresponds to the voiceless velar fricative x found in other varieties of Adyghe. This sound is only known to be used in the Black Sea dialect. {| class="wikitable" style="text-align:center" ! rowspan="2" colspan="2" | ! colspan="2" | Labial ! rowspan="2" |Bidental ! colspan="3" | Alveolar ! colspan="2" | Post-<br />alveolar ! colspan="2" | Alveolo-<br />palatal ! rowspan="2" | Retroflex ! colspan="2" | Velar ! colspan="2" | Uvular ! rowspan="2" | Pharyngeal ! colspan="2" | Glottal |- ! plain ! lab. ! plain !sib. ! lab. ! plain ! lab. !plain !lab. ! plain ! lab. ! plain ! lab. ! plain ! lab. |- ! colspan=2 | Nasal | m | m史 | | n | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |- ! rowspan="3" | Plosive/ Affricate ! ejective | p始 | p史始 | | t始 |t汀s始 | t史始 |t汀蕛始 | | | |t汀蕚始 | k始 | k史始 | | | | | |- ! voiceless | p | | | t |t汀s |t汀s史 |t汀蕛 | |t汀蓵<sup>2</sup> |t汀蓵史 |t汀蕚 | k | k史 | q | q史 | | 蕯 | 蕯史 |- ! voiced | b | | | d |d汀z |d汀z史 |d汀蕭 | |d汀蕬<sup>2</sup> |d汀蕬史 |d汀蕫 | 伞<sup>1</sup> | 伞史 | | | | | |- ! rowspan="3" | Fricative ! ejective | | | |涩始 | | | 蕛始 | 蕛史始 |蓵始 |蓵史始 | | | | | | | | |- ! voiceless | f | |h酞蛦<sup>2</sup> | 涩 |s | | 蕛 | 蕛史 | 蓵 |蓵史 | 蕚 | x | x史 | 蠂 | 蠂史 | 魔 | | |- ! voiced | v<sup>1</sup> | | | 僧 |z | | 蕭 | 蕭史 | 蕬 |蕬史 | 蕫 | 桑 | | 蕘 | 蕘史 | | | |- ! colspan="2" | Approximant | w | | | | | | | | j | | | | w | | | | | |- ! colspan="2" | Trill | | | | r | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |} # These consonants exist only in borrowed words. # Note: Adyghe has many consonants that appear across its dialects, and thus has a complex system of consonant allophony.
