==Behaviour== Although this shark is a bottom-dweller and appears harmless, it can inflict painful lacerations if provoked, due to its powerful jaws and sharp teeth. It may bite if a diver approaches the head or grabs the tail.<ref name=Bester2010>Bester, C. (2010): [http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/discover/species-profiles/squatina-californica Florida Museum of Natural History. Pacific Angelshark.]</ref> Angelsharks have a unique way of breathing compared to most other benthic fish. They do not pump out water from the oropharyngeal cavity like other fish. Instead they use gill flaps located under their body to pump out water during respiration. Doing so also allows them to be more discreet and prevent detection.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Standora |first1=Edward A. |last2=Nelson |first2=Donald R. |year=1977 |title=A Telemetric Study of the Behavior of Free-Swimming Pacific Angel Sharks, ''Squatina californica'' |journal=Bulletin of the Southern California Academy of Sciences |volume=76 |issue=3 |url=https://scholar.oxy.edu/scas/vol76/iss3/4 |access-date=2019-04-12 |archive-date=2020-07-28 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200728023900/https://scholar.oxy.edu/scas/vol76/iss3/4/ |url-status=dead }}</ref>
