=== Nepal === Caste system in Nepal The Nepali caste system resembles in some respects the Indian jΔti system, with numerous jΔti divisions with a varna system superimposed. Inscriptions attest the beginnings of a caste system during the Licchavi period. Jayasthiti Malla (1382β1395) categorised Newars into 64 castes (Gellner 2001). A similar exercise was made during the reign of Mahindra Malla (1506β1575). The Hindu social code was later set up in the Gorkha Kingdom by Ram Shah (1603β1636).
