==Personal life and death==
In 1870 he married Frances Martha Neal who died in 1908. In 1909 he married Margaret Augusta Percival. Abbe enjoyed [[ethnology]], oriental [[archaeology]], [[geology]], [[botany]], and music in his off time.<ref name=hum/>

Abbe died in 1916 aged 77 years in [[Chevy Chase, Maryland|Chevy Chase]], MD after more than 45 years of scientific achievement.<ref name=obit>{{harvnb|Anon|1916|p=23}}</ref><ref name=EB/> He was buried in [[Rock Creek Cemetery]] in Washington, D.C.
