===Arable and haymeadow commons===
Surviving commons are almost all pasture, but in earlier times, [[arable land|arable]] farming and [[hay]]making were significant, with strips of land in the [[Open field system|common arable fields]] and common [[Hay meadow|haymeadow]]s assigned annually by [[Sortition|lot]]. When not in use for those purposes, such commons were [[Grazing|graze]]d. Examples include the common arable fields around the village of [[Laxton, Nottinghamshire#Open Fields|Laxton]] in Nottinghamshire, and a common meadow at [[North Meadow, Cricklade]].
