Open-source tools to create directory services include OpenLDAP, the [[Kerberos (protocol)|Kerberos protocol]] and [[Samba software]], which can function as a Windows [[domain controller]] with Kerberos and LDAP [[Front and back ends|back ends]]. Administration is by GOsa or Samba SWAT.
