==Weather== Winter weather at Donner Pass can be brutal. Precipitation averages 51.6 in per year, and because California has a Mediterranean climate wherein most precipitation falls in the winter, much of it falls as snow. At an average of 411.5 in per year, Donner Pass is one of the snowiest places in the contiguous United States. Four times since 1880 total snowfall at Donner Summit has exceeded 775 in and topped 800 in in both 1938 and 1952. To take advantage of the heavy snows, the Boreal Ski Resort was built to the north. Ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area report an average of 300 to of snowfall per season. Winds in the pass can also become extreme and wind gusts in excess of 100 mph are common during winter storms. Winter temperatures in the area drop below 0 F several times each year; the all-time record low for California of was recorded at Boca (east of Truckee) in January 1937. The winter of 1846β47 was especially severe, contributing immensely to the disaster of the Donner Party. {{Weather box |location = Soda Springs 39.3019 N, 120.3856 W, Elevation: 6887 ft (1991β2020 normals) |single line = y |Jan high F = 40.0 |Feb high F = 40.5 |Mar high F = 43.5 |Apr high F = 47.8 |May high F = 56.1 |Jun high F = 65.7 |Jul high F = 74.8 |Aug high F = 75.0 |Sep high F = 69.8 |Oct high F = 58.6 |Nov high F = 46.3 |Dec high F = 39.0 |Jan mean F = 31.3 |Feb mean F = 31.2 |Mar mean F = 33.6 |Apr mean F = 37.3 |May mean F = 44.7 |Jun mean F = 53.2 |Jul mean F = 61.4 |Aug mean F = 61.3 |Sep mean F = 56.5 |Oct mean F = 46.8 |Nov mean F = 36.7 |Dec mean F = 30.4 |Jan low F = 22.5 |Feb low F = 22.0 |Mar low F = 23.7 |Apr low F = 26.7 |May low F = 33.3 |Jun low F = 40.7 |Jul low F = 48.0 |Aug low F = 47.6 |Sep low F = 43.1 |Oct low F = 35.0 |Nov low F = 27.1 |Dec low F = 21.8 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 13.16 |Feb precipitation inch = 12.26 |Mar precipitation inch = 12.15 |Apr precipitation inch = 6.99 |May precipitation inch = 4.74 |Jun precipitation inch = 1.57 |Jul precipitation inch = 0.43 |Aug precipitation inch = 0.45 |Sep precipitation inch = 0.99 |Oct precipitation inch = 3.89 |Nov precipitation inch = 7.57 |Dec precipitation inch = 14.35 |Jan snow inch = 73.00 |Feb snow inch = 84.20 |Mar snow inch = 105.70 |Apr snow inch = 41.20 |May snow inch = 15.60 |Jun snow inch = 1.80 |Jul snow inch = 0.00 |Aug snow inch = 0.00 |Sep snow inch = 1.50 |Oct snow inch = 9.90 |Nov snow inch = 42.80 |Dec snow inch = 69.30 |year snow inch = |source=PRISM Climate Group |source 2 = NOAA (precipitation & snowfall) }}
