==School trips in east Asia== [[File:京都市立第一工業学校の修学旅行 平壌玄武門前(1933年).jpg|thumb|right|200px|A college students group from [[Kyoto, Kyoto|Kyoto]] visiting [[Pyongyang]] (1933)]] In Japan, in addition to the one-day field trip, the school trip, called ''shūgaku ryokō'' ({{langx|ja|[[:ja:修学旅行|修学旅行]]}}, literally "learning journey"), has a history since 1886, and is now part of the [[Middle school#Japan|middle school]] and [[Education in Japan#Upper secondary school|high school]] [[curriculum]], with all students participating in such a program. The trip is usually longer than several days, such as a week or several weeks long. The typical locations visited within Japan are regions of national or historical significance, such as ancient capitals of [[Kyoto, Kyoto|Kyoto]] and [[Nara, Nara|Nara]], [[Nagasaki, Nagasaki|Nagasaki]], for its experience with nuclear weapons and historical significance as the sole international port during the country's 17th–19th century [[Sakoku|isolationist foreign policy]] {{langx|ja|鎖国|sakoku}} (さこく) and [[Nikkō]] 日光, popular ''[[onsen]]'' [[spa town]] renowned for its beauty.<ref>[https://gowithguide.com/blog/school-excursions-shugaku-ryoko-2358 School Excursions, Shugaku-ryoko, 修学旅行 (GoWithGuide, 2021)]</ref> Travelling abroad is occasionally chosen as an option by some schools.<ref>[https://bccie.bc.ca/news/opportunity-to-host-short-term-tour-groups-shugaku-ryoko-of-japanese-k-12-students/ Host short-term tour groups (Shugaku Ryoko) of Japanese K-12 students (BC Counsil for International Education, 2015)]</ref> In other Asian regions/countries such as South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, the school trip, when arranged, tends to become a voluntary part of the school curriculum.
