According to analyst Ankarali Jan, the Grey Wolves have a largely unofficial presence in Turkey's major universities, but their "real power is on the streets, among disaffected poor people in predominantly Turkish Sunni neighbourhoods."<ref name="middleeasteye 2015" /> Norm Dixon wrote in the ''[[Green Left Weekly]]'' in 1999 that the MHP and Grey Wolves "retain strong support within the military."<ref name="greenleft 1999" /> In 2018, Tom Stevenson described it as a "street movement."<ref name="movement"/>
