This subfamily has alternately been called Echinosoricinae, Galericinae, and Hylomyinae. Some researchers prefer Hylomyinae because the specific relationships of the extinct genus ''[[Galerix]]'' to living erinaceids are uncertain.<ref name="Gould95" />
