==Satellite broadcasting== In the late 1980s the IBA was appointed as regulator and transmitter operator for the first DBS ([[direct broadcast satellite|direct broadcasting by satellite]]) service for the UK and awarded the franchise to BSB ([[British Satellite Broadcasting]]).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZhhkOsXRCM|title=BSB contract award – December 1986|last=Transdiffusion Broadcasting System|date=2 June 2012|via=YouTube|access-date=20 August 2018|archive-date=2 September 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200902230126/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZhhkOsXRCM&gl=US&hl=en|url-status=live}}</ref> A year before the launch of BSB, the rival [[Sky Television (1984–1990)|Sky Television]] was able to launch an analogue service, and intended to overshadow BSB by leasing transponders from [[SES (company)|Société Européenne des Satellites]]' [[RCA Astro Electronics|RCA Astro]]-built satellite, Astra 1A. BSB launched in early 1990 but just over six months after BSB's launch, Sky and BSB merged.
