Elected to the [[US House of Representatives]] in 1842 as a [[Whig Party (United States)|Whig]], Collamer served three terms, from

Jacob Collamer''|page=12}} He opposed the extension of slavery, the [[Texas Annexation]], and the [[Mexican–American War]]; supported high tariffs to help American manufacturers and received national recognition for his "Wool and Woolens" speech on tariffs.<ref name="auto">John J.
