It replaced highly paid glass blowers and child labor helpers and led to the [[mass production]] of glass bottles.<ref>{{ Cite web | title = The American Society of Mechanical Engineers Designates the Owens "AR" Bottle Machine as an International Historic Engineering Landmark | year = 1983 | url = http://files.asme.org/ASMEORG/Communities/History/Landmarks/5612.pdf | url-status = dead | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20130405015937/http://files.asme.org/ASMEORG/Communities/History/Landmarks/5612.pdf | archive-date = 2013-04-05 }}</ref> After 1900 factories were [[electrification|electrified]], and electric motors and controls were used to perform more complicated mechanical operations.
