Methanethiol is mainly used to produce the essential amino acid [[methionine]], which is used as a dietary component in poultry and animal feed.<ref name="John Wiley & Sons, Inc"/> Methanethiol is also used in the [[plastics industry|plastic industry]] as a moderator for [[Radical polymerization|free-radical polymerizations]]<ref name="John Wiley & Sons, Inc" /> and as a precursor in the manufacture of [[pesticide]]s including [[isomalathion]].

This chemical is also used in the [[natural gas]] industry as an [[odorant]], as it mixes well with [[methane]].
