During the [[Spanish Civil War]], [[Germany]] deployed a large number of "volunteers," also known as the [[Condor Legion]], to serve as [[mercenary|mercenaries]] and pilots to assist the [[Nationalist faction (Spanish Civil War)|nationalist forces]].
