==Homicide== On 21 June, Calvert visited Smedley's home at [[Wendens Ambo]], [[Essex]], to request the removal of the raiders and the return of vital transmitter parts. Calvert was shot dead by Smedley in what has been described as a "violent row".<ref name="btr">{{cite news|last1=Lynskey|first1=Dorian|title=All bands on deck|url=https://www.theguardian.com/film/2009/mar/27/boat-that-rocked-background|access-date=2017-05-02|newspaper=[[The Guardian]]|date=2009-03-27}}</ref> Smedley said he did it to protect his housekeeper and at the subsequent trial, it was alleged that there was a violent struggle.<ref name="briggs">Asa Briggs, ''The history of broadcasting in the United Kingdom, Volume 5''. Forest Press, 1996, p. 139</ref> Smedley claimed that he feared Calvert was there to kill him and he was acquitted of murder on the grounds of self-defence.<ref name="narch1" /> Calvert was buried on 1 July 1966 at St Peter's, [[Dunchurch]]. Screaming Lord Sutch and members of the group Pinkerton's Assorted Colours were among the mourners at the funeral.
