[[Taganrog]] served as the capital of the [[Ukrainian Soviet Republic]] in March-April 1918,<ref name=day>{{cite web|url=https://day.kyiv.ua/ru/article/istoriya-i-ya/granicy-razdeleniya-3|title=Границы разделения-3|language=uk|access-date=17 August 2024}}</ref> and was the place of establishment of the [[Communist Party of Ukraine (Soviet Union)|Communist Party of Ukraine]]. The Rostov Oblast was formed in 1937 out of the [[Azov-Black Sea Krai]]. During [[World War II]], it was occupied by [[Nazi Germany]] in 1941–1943.
