===1970s β 1980s: 5.56Γ45mm, XL70, XL73, XL78=== [[File:British Assault Rifles MOD 45162601.jpg|thumb|Pictured left to right are the L85A2, XL 60 and EM-2]] After NATO's decision to standardise ammunition among its members, Enfield engineers re-chambered the rifles to the American [[5.56Γ45mm NATO]] M193 cartridge. The newly redesigned 5.56mm version of the XL64E5 became known as the XL70E3.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.forgottenweapons.com/sa80-history-xl70-series-final-prototypes-individual-weapon-and-lsw/|title=SA80 History: XL70 Series Final Prototypes (Individual Weapon and LSW)|date=13 May 2017|website=forgottenweapons.com|access-date=30 May 2017 |first=Ian |last=McCollum}}</ref> The left-handed XL68 was also re-chambered in 5.56Γ45mm as the XL78. The 5.56mm light support weapon variant, the XL73E3, developed from the XL65E4, was noted for the full-length receiver extension with the bipod under the muzzle now indicative of the type.<ref name="Watters-Chronology">{{cite web |author=Wetters-Chronology |title=The 5.56 X 45mm: 1974β1985 β A Chronology of Development |work=Daniel Watters, The Gun Zone |url=http://www.thegunzone.com/556dw-3.html |access-date=2007-05-05 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070504085923/http://www.thegunzone.com/556dw-3.html |archive-date=4 May 2007 |df=dmy-all}}</ref>
