==Political exile and controversy== Houston was reunited with Ahuludegi's group of Cherokee in mid-1829.{{sfn|Haley|2002|pp=64β65}} Because of Houston's government experience and connections with President Jackson, several local Native American tribes asked Houston to mediate disputes and communicate their needs to the Jackson administration.{{sfn|Haley|2002|pp=68β69}} In late 1829, the Cherokee accorded Houston tribal membership and dispatched him to Washington to negotiate several issues.{{sfn|Haley|2002|pp=71β72}} In anticipation of the removal of the remaining Cherokee east of the Mississippi River, Houston unsuccessfully bid to supply rations to the Native Americans during their journey.{{sfn|Haley|2002|pp=73β74}} When Houston returned to Washington in 1832, Congressman [[William Stanbery]] alleged that Houston had placed a fraudulent bid in 1830 in collusion with the Jackson administration. On April 13, 1832, after Stanbery refused to answer Houston's letters regarding the incident, Houston beat Stanbery with a cane.{{sfn|Haley|2002|pp=80β82}} After the beating, the House of Representatives brought Houston to trial. By a vote of 106 to 89, the House convicted Houston, and Speaker of the House [[Andrew Stevenson]] formally reprimanded Houston.<ref name=hbot /> A federal court also required Houston to pay $500 in damages.<ref name="Williams1893">{{cite book|author=Alfred Mason Williams|title=Sam Houston and the War of Independence in Texas|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=T6MEAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA44|year=1893|publisher=Houghton, Mifflin.|isbn=978-0-7222-9291-4|page=49}}</ref>
