==Geology== The Murgia is a [[karst]] plateau. Winter rains drain through the soil into fissures in the strata of limestone bedrock and flow through underground watercourses into the Adriatic. There is no permanent surface water, and water for living purposes must be trapped in catchment basins and cisterns. The surface forms a landscape of rolling hills and ridges punctuated now and again with [[Sinkhole|dolines]] and other forms of enclosed depressions characteristic of karsts.<ref>Anthony H. Galt, ''Far from the Church Bells: Settlement and Society in an Apulian Town'', Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1991, xiii + 276 p., p. 19.</ref>
