====Shift in production's centre of gravity====
The traditional centres of hand textile production such as India, the Middle East, and China could not withstand competition from machine-made textiles, which destroyed the hand-made textile industries and left millions without work, many of whom starved.<ref name="Beckert_2014"/> The Industrial Revolution generated an enormous and unprecedented economic division in the world, as measured by the share of manufacturing output.
