Aleut has a basic three-vowel system including the high front {{IPA|/i/}}, low {{IPA|/a/}}, and high back {{IPA|/u/}}. Aleut vowels contrast with their long counterparts {{IPA|/iː/}}, {{IPA|/aː/}}, and {{IPA|/uː/}}.

Notably, Aleut {{IPA|/u/}} is pronounced slightly lower than {{IPA|/i/}} in the vowel space.

The long vowel {{IPA|/aː/}} is pronounced retracted in the vowel space creating a significant distinction relative to the vowel length of {{IPA|/a/}}. The two high vowels are pronounced with the same vowel quality regardless of vowel length.<ref name=":2" />

In contact with a [[uvular consonant|uvular]], {{IPA|/i/}} is lowered to {{IPA|[e]}}, {{IPA|/a/}} is backed to {{IPA|[ɑ]}}, and {{IPA|/u/}} is lowered to {{IPA|[o]}}. In contact with a [[coronal consonant|coronal]], {{IPA|/a/}} is raised to {{IPA|[e]}} or {{IPA|[ɛ]}}, and {{IPA|/u/}} is fronted to {{IPA|[ʉ]}}.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":2" />

The mid-vowels {{IPA|[ɔ]}} and {{IPA|[ɛ]}} occur only in family names like ''Nevzorof'' and very recently introduced Russian loanwords.
