== Development == [[Steve Wozniak]] said in January 1985 that Apple was investigating the 65816, and that an 8 MHz version would "beat the pants off a [[Motorola 68000|68000]] in most applications", but any product using it would have to be compatible with the Apple II.<ref name="byte198501">{{cite magazine | url=https://archive.org/details/BYTE_Vol_10-01_1985-01_Through_The_Hourglass/page/n167 | title=The Apple Story / Part 2: More History and the Apple III | magazine=[[Byte (magazine)|BYTE]] |volume=10|number=1|publisher=UBM Technology Group|issn=0360-5280|oclc=637876171| date=January 1985 | access-date=October 26, 2013 |last1=Williams|first1=Gregg |last2=Moore|first2=Rob | pages=166 | type=interview}}</ref> Rumors spread about his work on an "Apple IIx".<ref name="pournelle198503">{{cite magazine | url=https://archive.org/stream/byte-magazine-1985-03-rescan/1985_03_BYTE_10-03_Bargain_Computing#page/n325/mode/2up | title=On the Road: Hackercon and COMDEX | magazine=[[Byte (magazine)|BYTE]] |volume=10|number=3|publisher=UBM Technology Group|issn=0360-5280|oclc=637876171| date=March 1985 | access-date=19 March 2016 | author=Pournelle, Jerry | pages=313}}</ref> The IIx was said to have a 16-bit CPU, one megabyte of RAM, and better graphics and sound.<ref name="statt198608">{{cite magazine | url=https://archive.org/stream/inCider_86-08#page/n15/mode/2up | title=Future II's | magazine=inCider | date=August 1986 |volume=4|issue=8| access-date=10 August 2014 | author=Statt, Paul | pages=14}}</ref><ref name="incider198609">{{cite magazine | url=https://archive.org/stream/inCider_1986-09#page/n15/mode/2up | title=Extras for the <nowiki>//x</nowiki> | magazine=inCider |volume=4|issue=9| date=September 1986 | access-date=2 July 2014 |author1=de Peyster, Deborah |author2=Statt, Paul | pages=14}}</ref> "IIx" was the code name for Apple's first internal project to develop a next-generation Apple II based on the 65816. The IIx project, though, became bogged down when it attempted to include various coprocessors allowing it to emulate other computer systems. Early samples of the 65816 were also problematic. These problems led to the cancellation of the IIx project, but later, a new project was formed to produce an updated Apple II. This project, which led to the released IIGS, was known by various codenames while the new system was being developed, including "Phoenix", "[[John Rambo|Rambo]]", "[[Gumby]]", and "Cortland". There were rumors of several vastly enhanced [[prototype]]s built over the years at Apple but none were ever released. Only one, the "[[Mark Twain]]", has been revealed so far. The Mark Twain prototype (named for [[Mark Twain|Twain]]'s famous quote "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated")<ref>{{cite web|first=Steven|last=Weyhrich|date=2012-09-23|url=http://apple2history.org/2012/09/23/the-apple-ii-guide-and-mark-twain/|title=The Apple II Guide and Mark Twain|website=apple2history.org|access-date=May 21, 2014|archive-date=July 25, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130725083613/http://apple2history.org/2012/09/23/the-apple-ii-guide-and-mark-twain/|url-status=live}}</ref> was expected to have the "ROM 04" revision (although prototypes that have been discovered do not contain any new ROM code) <ref>{{cite web|last=Mesa|first=Andy F.|url=http://applemuseum.bott.org/sections/computers/IIgs.html|title=Apple IIGS|website=The Apple Museum|access-date=May 21, 2014|archive-date=September 16, 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140916121228/http://applemuseum.bott.org/sections/computers/IIgs.html|url-status=live}}</ref> and featured an 8 MHz 65C816, built-in [[SuperDrive]], 2 MB of RAM, and a [[hard drive]].<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=71|website=OLD-COMPUTERS.com Museum|title=APPLE IIgs|access-date=May 21, 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20061108095625/http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=71|archive-date=November 8, 2006|url-status=dead}}</ref> Some design features from the unsuccessful [[Apple III]] lived on in the Apple IIGS, such as GS/OS borrowing elements from [[Apple SOS|SOS]] (including, by way of ProDOS, the SOS [[file system]]), a unique keyboard feature for dual-speed arrow keys, and colorized [[ASCII]] text.
