Austin is in western Mower County in southeastern Minnesota. It is {{convert|20|mi}} east of [[Albert Lea, Minnesota|Albert Lea]], {{convert|41|mi}} southwest of [[Rochester, Minnesota|Rochester]], {{convert|100|mi|-1}} south of [[Minneapolis]], and {{convert|12|mi}} north of the [[Iowa]] border. The city is bordered to the south by [[Austin Township, Mower County, Minnesota|Austin Township]], to the east by [[Windom Township, Mower County, Minnesota|Windom]] and [[Red Rock Township, Mower County, Minnesota|Red Rock]] townships, and to the north by [[Lansing Township, Mower County, Minnesota|Lansing Township]] and the city of [[Mapleview, Minnesota|Mapleview]]. Austin is bordered to the west by [[Oakland Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota|Oakland Township]] in [[Freeborn County, Minnesota|Freeborn County]].

According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], Austin has a total area of {{convert|13.39|sqmi|sqkm|2}}, of which {{convert|13.29|sqmi|sqkm|2}} are land and {{convert|0.11|sqmi|sqkm|2}}, or 0.79%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2023"/> Its [[elevation]] is approximately {{convert|1200|ft|m|abbr=on}}. The [[Cedar River (Iowa River tributary)|Cedar River]], a tributary of the [[Iowa River]], flows southward through the east side of the city. Tributaries within the city include Turtle Creek from the west and [[East Side Lake|Dobbins Creek]] from the east.

Austin has a [[humid continental climate]] typical of the [[Upper Midwest]]. Winters are cold and snowy; summers are warm with moderate to high humidity.
