==Personal life==

Fries married Rena Bonnema on February 15, 1952; the two remained married for 70 years.<ref name=hospice/> 
At the time of his death, he had three children, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.<ref name=wapobit/>  His hobbies included [[model railroading]] and working on his old [[Willys MB|military jeep]].{{r|AA}}
