==Examples== One of the most significant triumphs of the case–control study was the demonstration of the link between tobacco smoking and lung cancer, by [[Richard Doll]] and [[Austin Bradford Hill|Bradford Hill]]. They showed a statistically significant association in a large case–control study.<ref name="pmid14772469">{{cite journal |vauthors=Doll R, Hill AB | title = Smoking and carcinoma of the lung; preliminary report | journal = Br Med J | volume = 2 | issue = 4682 | pages = 739–48 | year = 1950 | pmid = 14772469 | pmc = 2038856 | doi = 10.1136/bmj.2.4682.739}}</ref> Opponents argued for many years that this type of study cannot prove causation, but the eventual results of cohort studies confirmed the causal link which the case–control studies suggested,<ref name="pmid13364389">{{cite journal |vauthors=Doll R, Hill AB | title = Lung cancer and other causes of death in relation to smoking; a second report on the mortality of British doctors | journal = Br Med J | volume = 2 | issue = 5001 | pages = 1071–81 | year = 1956 | pmid = 13364389 | pmc = 2035864 | doi = 10.1136/bmj.2.5001.1071}}</ref><ref name="pmid15213107">{{cite journal |vauthors=Doll R, Peto R, Boreham J, Sutherland I | title = Mortality in relation to smoking: 50 years' observations on male British doctors | journal = BMJ | volume = 328 | issue = 7455 | pages = 1519 | year = 2004 | pmid = 15213107 | pmc = 437139 | doi = 10.1136/bmj.38142.554479.AE }}</ref> and it is now accepted that tobacco smoking is the cause of about 87% of all lung cancer mortality in the US.
