The town is predominantly [[Muslim]]. The Catholic [[Our Lady Queen of Africa Cathedral, El-Obeid|Cathedral of Our Lady Queen of Africa]] in El-Obeid is considered to be one of the largest and oldest churches in Sudan.<ref>{{Cite web|last=Hassan|first=Faiz|title=Religious Coexistence in Al Obied|url=https://www.andariya.com/post/religious-coexistence-in-al-obied/|access-date=2020-12-23|website=Andariya}}</ref> It was founded in 1872 by [[Daniele Comboni]], an [[Italian people|Italian]] [[Roman Catholic]] [[bishop]], who worked for the [[Catholic missions]] in Sudan between 1858 and his death in Khartoum in 1881.
