In the [[2015–16 La Liga|2015–16 season]], Getafe were relegated to second division after spending 12 years in first campaign. However, in [[2016–17 Segunda División|2016–17]], the club immediately returned to La Liga after defeating [[SD Huesca|Huesca]] and [[CD Tenerife|Tenerife]] to gain promotion via [[2016–17 Segunda División#Promotion play-offs|the play-offs]].
