In December 2020, it was announced Merron would be conferred a [[life peerage]] after a [[2020 Political Honours|nomination]] by Labour Party leader [[Keir Starmer]]. In the [[May 2021 British shadow cabinet reshuffle|May shadow cabinet reshuffle]], she was appointed to the Shadow Health Team.
