===2000 census===
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 3,501 people, 1,487 households, and 887 families living in the city.  The [[population density]] was {{Convert|921.7|PD/sqmi|/km2|sigfig=4|abbr=out}}.  There were 1,659 housing units at an average density of {{Convert|436.8|/sqmi|/km2|sigfig=4|abbr=out}}.  The racial makeup of the city was 94.03% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.26% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.17% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 4.03% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.77% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.74% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.51% of the population.

There were 1,487 households, out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% were non-families. 36.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,452, and the median income for a family was $42,553. Males had a median income of $30,503 versus $21,676 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $18,444.  About 4.6% of families and 11.1% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 17.4% of those under age 18 and 9.4% of those age 65 or over.
