Karlsruhe, which was founded by [[Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach|Charles III William]], became a major city in the 19th century. In the 1950s, Karlsruhe became a significant city where the population started to grow. It gained a large student population due to the university of technology and media arts.
