====1944==== The first modern slates of unpledged electors were fielded in the [[U.S. presidential election, 1944|1944 election]] as a protest against certain aspects of President [[Franklin D. Roosevelt]]βs [[New Deal]] and support for [[Desegregation in the United States|desegregation]].
