Smart cards can be used as a [[security token]].

Some [[Disk encryption software|disk encryption systems]], such as [[VeraCrypt]] and Microsoft's [[BitLocker]], can use smart cards to securely hold encryption keys, and also to add another layer of encryption to critical parts of the secured disk.
