==Predation==
The alligator snapping turtle is most vulnerable to predators before and shortly after hatching. The eggs can be eaten by birds or mammals. The risk of predation decreases as the turtle gets bigger, so the adult turtle does not have as many predators.<ref name="Ligon2007"/> Their largest predator in many parts of their range is the [[North American river otter|northern river otter]] ''(Lontra canadensis)'' when the turtles are young.<ref name="Ligon2007"/>
