These can be dismissed as [[folk etymology|folk etymologies]], given the well-attested term "cock-tail" for a horse. [[Dale DeGroff]] hypothesizes that the word evolved from the French {{lang|fr|coquetier}}, for an eggcup in which Antoine A.
