==Notable postings== Several notable figures have served at the fort, including [[Arthur MacArthur Jr.]], [[Leonard Wood]], [[Benjamin Foulois]], [[Frederick Funston]], and John J. Pershing.<ref name=Cagle/>{{rp|30,32,38,57}} Maj. Gen. [[John Wilson Ruckman]], Commander of the Southern Department, was based at Fort Sam Houston just after the [[Houston Riot (1917)|Houston Riot of 1917]]. [[Brigadier General|Brig. Gen.]] [[Billy Mitchell]] was posted there after being demoted to [[Colonel (United States)|colonel]] for disobeying orders. [[Dwight D. Eisenhower]] was posted to Fort Sam Houston twice during his career, as was [[Walter Krueger]].<ref name=Cagle/>{{rp|83}} During Eisenhower's first posting from 1915 to 1917, he met and married [[Mamie Eisenhower|Mamie Doud]]. He was posted at the fort when the [[attack on Pearl Harbor]] occurred in 1941. Their first home is one of the buildings preserved as an historic monument. Gen. [[Jonathan M. Wainwright (general)|Wainwright]] took command of the [[Fourth United States Army]] here in 1946.<ref name=Cagle/>{{rp|89}}
