===Failed Ahold bid and bankruptcy === In March 1999, [[Ahold|Royal Ahold]], a Dutch supermarket company which operated [[Edwards Super Food Store|Edwards]] stores in the New York area, agreed to a $1.75 billion deal to acquire Pathmark.
