==3.3 Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union== EU law is bound by the [[Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union]], which brings together the most important personal freedoms and rights enjoyed by citizens of the EU into one legally binding document. The Charter was declared in 2000, and came into force in December 2009 along with the Treaty of Lisbon. It includes provisions related to human dignity, non-discrimination, and asylum. The Convention is divided into 6 chapters (Dignity, Freedoms, Equality, Solidarity, Citizen’s rights, Justice) and articles. These rights and principles are instrumental in shaping the legitimacy of sea rescue operations.<ref>{{cite web |title=EU Charter of Fundamental Rights |url=https://commission.europa.eu/aid-development-cooperation-fundamental-rights/your-rights-eu/eu-charter-fundamental-rights_en |website=EU Charter of Fundamental Rights |access-date=15 October 2023}}</ref>
