==Evolution==
Some 23-million-year-old [[fossils]] of arapaima or a very similar species have been found in the [[Miocene]] Villavieja Formation of [[Colombia]].<ref name=Lundberg>{{cite journal |author1=Lundberg, J.G.  |author2=B.
