Ascona has an area, {{as of|1997|lc=on}}, of {{convert|4.97|km2|sqmi|sp=us}}. Of this area, {{convert|1.78|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 35.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while {{convert|1.66|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 33.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, {{convert|2.63|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 52.9% is settled (buildings or roads), {{convert|0.01|km2|acre|abbr=on}} or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes and {{convert|0.2|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 4.0% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing, and buildings made up 26.8% and transportation infrastructure made up 13.7%, while parks, green belts, and sports fields made up 10.9%. Out of the forested land, 28.4% of the total land area is heavily forested and 5.0% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 6.0% is used for growing crops, while 3.0% is used for orchards or vine crops, and 26.8% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in lakes. The municipality is located in the Locarno District, on the right bank of the [[Maggia (river)|Maggia delta]]. It consists of the town of Ascona which includes the sections of Gerbi, Monescie, Monte Verità, Moscia, and Saleggi.
