===Federation era and World War I (1901β1918)=== In 1901, the six self-governing Australian colonies [[Federation of Australia|federated]] to form a unified nation. Artists such as [[Hans Heysen]] and [[Elioth Gruner]] built on the Australian landscape tradition of the Heidelberg painters, creating grand, nationalist pastoral landscapes.
