On 24 February 2022, during the [[2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine]], the city was under siege by the [[Russian Armed Forces]] according to the Russian Ministry of Defense,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://t.me/bbbreaking/116512|title=Раньше всех. Ну почти.|website=t.me|access-date=2022-02-25}}</ref> in its first [[Battle of Chernihiv|battle]] since the Second World War. On 19 August 2023, a Russian [[August 2023 Chernihiv missile strike|missile strike]] killed seven in the city.
