===Death===
In February 1909, Geronimo was thrown from his horse while riding home and lay in the cold all night until a friend found him extremely ill.<ref name="The American Experience, We Shall Remain: Geronimo" /> He died of [[pneumonia]] on February 17, 1909, as a prisoner of the United States at Fort Sill.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.historytoday.com/richard-cavendish/death-geronimo |title=Death of Geronimo|work= History Today |access-date= |archive-date=April 28, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140428035131/http://www.historytoday.com/richard-cavendish/death-geronimo |url-status=live |first = Richard|last = Cavendish|date = 2 February 2009}}</ref> On his deathbed, he confessed to his nephew that he regretted his decision to surrender.<ref name="The American Experience, We Shall Remain: Geronimo" /> His last words were reported to be said to his nephew, "I should have never surrendered.
