An elected Council governs and controls the affairs of the institute.<ref name="Institute of Physics Council">{{cite web |url=http://www.iop.org/about/governance/ |title=IOP Governance |publisher=Institute of Physics |access-date=2019-12-27 |archive-date=2019-12-27 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191227001348/http://www.iop.org/about/governance/ |url-status=live }}</ref> The council meets four times a year and has up to 21 members, of whom 18 are elected by members of the institute.

The president is elected by the membership of the institute and serves a term of two years.
