He was part of the East German squads which won the [[1986 UEFA European Under-18 Football Championship]] and finished third at the [[1987 FIFA World Youth Championship]]. In November 1986, he made his debut for the full [[East Germany national football team]] in a [[UEFA Euro 1988]] [[UEFA Euro 1988 qualifying|qualifier]] against [[France national football team|France]] at [[Zentralstadion]] in Leipzig. On 12 September 1990, Sammer captained East Germany in its final match.
