==Hydrolock== {{Main|Hydrolock}} Whenever a radial engine remains shut down for more than a few minutes, oil or fuel may drain into the combustion chambers of the lower cylinders or accumulate in the lower intake pipes, ready to be drawn into the cylinders when the engine starts. As the piston approaches [[top dead center]] (TDC) of the compression stroke, this liquid, being incompressible, stops piston movement. Starting or attempting to start the engine in such condition may result in a bent or broken connecting rod.<ref>{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=-kpRAQAAMAAJ&dq=The%20US%20Air%20Force%20Powerplant%20Maintenance%20Manual&pg=PP4|title=Powerplant Maintenance for Reciprocating Engines|publisher=[[Department of the Air Force]]|year=1953|pages=53β54}}</ref>
